“Stepping over dollars to pick up pennies.”I heard this recently. It is now on a sticky note in my conference room. Tiny reminders of our financial biases.

I spent a couple of days de-compressing after my 3-day conference with LPL. My mind gets full! My heart starts to overflow. And my motivation gets on overdrive. And it is a lot. As a recovering work-a-holic, I thought maybe a couple of days to let it sink in would be good. Now I’m home and rested. Ready to apply what I’ve learned. #lplfpcus

I love money conversations. They keep us real. They blow past small talk (which I find boring as hell). They show vulnerability and strength. They take courage. They affirm our shared struggles.Sharing our stories about money show our strength and give us context for how to move forward. Money conversations are a demonstration of hope. And I want to cultivate as much hope for this world as I can.

When I tell new clients that we talk to our clients at least every quarter, but often more, many are surprised. Their old advisors rarely talked to them, usually only to schedule an annual meeting.Lots of stuff happens during a year. And that stuff is usually NOT on anyone's time schedule, especially the advisor's timeline. So why would I artificially set up a system of communication? Our clients call us when there's a health event, when their car blows up or there's a big water leak in their home. Or when their parent has been having health issues, or their child is graduating from college. We call clients to wish them happy birthday or let them know that we are excited for their upcoming vacation and they can call us if there's an emergency while they're gone. We call clients to celebrate their new grandchildren, their promotions. Or just because we haven't talked to them in while.Of course, we have strategy meetings. But those are set up in the context of our clients lives. We support your clients' lifestyle. That requires we know who they are, what they think is important. We support them year-round, not just in one two-hour annual meeting.

Eight countries represented at my dining room table for dinner last night. We talked climate, acequias, family, hiking, land, tourism. Our shared experiences - from the US to Pakistan, Rwanda, Argentina, Philippines, Guam and Costa Rica— are humbling. Reminds me that we are a global community. Oh, and my dog, she stole the show, sharing her love and tricks to make everyone laugh. #globalties

Having fresh flowers in your house makes you happy! It is subtle. It is a small thing. And over time, everyday looking at fresh flowers in my house, that I have tended, is one of the loveliest things.

Last week I helped a client rollover her 401k. It has been four years since she left her previous employer and she really just didn't want to deal with it. And she kept putting it off. So we sat down for breakfast last week and I walked her through the process. She got on the phone with the 401k company after she got an error notice on the website. She learned that accounts over $100k cannot be transferred via their website. The Rep then went on to ask her about her husband. There was some question that the Rep thought meant that her husband would have to sign off on her rollover. She politely replied, " I am not married. I do not have a husband. And my name is the only name on the account." Well, in that case . . . She confirmed her email with the Rep. He said he would snail mail the paperwork to her, and only agreed to send the forms by email after asking to be transferred to a supervisor. Two days later, no email. It took two more phone calls to get the rollover confirmed. And a lot of frustration! The good thing: she now has complete control of her retirement funds and can invest them in a diversified way that takes her entire portfolio into account and her financial goals. And we won't ask her about her phantom husband either!
